The world was engaged in the "war to end all wars" and the effect of World War I struck hard into the soil of many countries, including Portugal. Coupled with the strife of international conflict was the battle raging within Portugal itself. The anti-Catholic sentiment fomented by the Freemasons had been passed into law making the practice of the Faith difficult and dangerous. But, heaven had a plan for Portugal and the Blessed Mother herself would intervene to save her.
