In Romans 12, verse 2, Saint Paul instructs us, "Do not be conformed to this age, but rather be transformed by the renewal of your mind so that you may know what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

What St. Paul gives us here is the heart of the Purgative Way, the first stage of the spiritual life: coming into conformity with the will of God.
