A Look Inside the Bizarre - and Alarming - World of "Occupy Wall Street"

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist

Even though the mainstream media loves to make comparisons between Tea Party rallies and the new Occupy Wall Street protests, a closer look reveals that these two movements could not be more opposite.

For instance, the tea party's stated goals were to fight for smaller government, reduce the debt ceiling, provide jobs for the unemployed and reduce taxes. Their tactics were to lobby lawmakers and elect officials whose conservative ideology was more in keeping with their own.

Let's compare this to the stated goals of the Occupy Wall Street crowd.

Among their published goals, they openly advocate for a continuation of the protests in order to "disrupt the system."

"We call workers not only to strike, but to seize their workplaces collectively . . . to seize the classrooms and free minds together," the goals state. They're also calling for the seizure of abandoned buildings and abandoned land.

Does anyone know of a single tea partier who advocated for the seizure of workplaces and schools?

Aside from these rather dramatic differences in the ideology of the two movements, consider the kind of depravity taking place at Occupy Wall Street events

An article in the New York Post cites drug use, litter and public fornication as very much a part of the gatherings. "Zucatti Park," says the paper, smells "like an open sewer -- with people urinating and defecating in public."

One eyewitness blogging at First Things reports a bizarre chant that was taken up by the crowd that went something like this:

"Everything seems to be possible. [Crowd Parrot Chant] You can travel to the moon.  [CPC] You can become immortal [CPC] by biogenetics.  You can have sex with animals, or whatever. [CPC]"

To the best of my knowledge, no one ever chanted any such thing at a tea party protest.

But it gets a lot worse. ABC News is reporting that a faction of the computer hacker group known as Anonymous has threatened, in a gesture of sympathy with Occupy, to launch a cyber attack against the New York Stock Exchange.

In a similar vein, KGO Newstalk 810 is reporting that Vincent Schiavone, founder and chairman of ListenLogic, a company that gives corporate clients advance warning of cyber attacks and of other threats circulating on the Internet, says threats related to the Occupy movement are becoming "alarming."

An online "Occupy Threat Center" created by ListenLogic says the company's analysis of "over one million social media posts" indicates significant increases in all of the following:

-Social media activity from Occupy supporters and activists promoting physical destruction and violent action.

-Direct and specific threats from Occupy "hacktivist" groups against specific financial and law enforcement targets.

-Social media posts, videos and images targeting: financial institutions that issue mortgages and student loans and that initiate foreclosures; corporate entities that received bailout money or government subsidies; companies that pay high executive salaries or bonuses; and companies perceived to be paying extremely low taxes.

Can anyone give me just one example of something like this ever coming out of a tea party?

Schiavone has also seen an increase in the number of postings that refer to killing and/or eating the rich. "There are images circulating of senior executives being decapitated, images of blood. Artists are releasing images of banks on fire," he said.

If Tea Partiers had produced such images, they would have been branded as hate-mongers and incendiaries by the mainstream media. But when Occupy Wall Street does it, the press simply looks the other way and simply refuses to report it. In fact, the only way a photo of a protestor defecating on a police car actually made it into the nightly news is because it was taken and released by the British press.

In spite of all these blatant contradictions between the two movements, the media continues to present Occupy Wall Street as just another peaceful gathering of a disgruntled electorate in the kind of fawning nightly coverage they never gave to the tea party.

"Contemplate this," says Media Research President Brent Bozell. "The 'Occupy' folks drew more broadcast network stories in the first nine days of coverage (24) than the Tea Party drew in the first nine months (19)."

The moral of this story is to beware of what news outlets you rely upon for news because they just might convince you that peace-loving Americans and anarchists have something in common.
