Was the Norway Shooter Really a Fundamentalist Christian?

By Susan Brinkmann, OCDS Staff Journalist Assertions that Anders Breivik, the man who killed 93 people while on a bombing and shooting spree in Oslo, Norway last week, is a Fundamentalist Christian not only appears to be a media fabrication, but there is also some evidence that the killer's Facebook page declaring him to be a Christian conservative was tampered with. Speaking on Florida's 1330 WEBY radio this weekend, preacher Carl Gallups points out that in Breivik's own words, as published in his 1500-page manifesto, he distinctly says that he is not religious, has doubts about God's existence and does not pray. While Breivik asserts that he supports the supremacy of Europe's Christian culture, he also supports his own pagan Nordic culture. In fact, the shooter goes on to hail Charles Darwin and identifies himself as a freemason, an "evolutionist" and a secular fundamentalist. "Things are not always what the media initially reports," conclude Gallup. The popular YouTube evangelism ministry known as PPSimmons has also produced a video  explaining why the description of Breivik as a fundamentalist Christian is more of a media fabrication than a fact. As the video points, there's a law in Norway requiring anyone born of two Norwegian parents to be automatically registered as a Protestant Christian. In order to be removed from this list, one has to register with another religious group or as a humanist. Breivik is indeed a Christian, but so is 80 percent of the population of Norway. The shooter is also being referred to as a "right wing extremist" even though he's a member of the more conservative branch of the liberal Progress party.  As PPSimmons summarizes, Breivik is actually "a Norwegian christian as is 80 percent of the entire populatioh. He was a member of the more conservative branch of the liberal party, and he is concerned about Al Qaeda's presence in his country. And so there it is. The leftist media now has what they have been wanting and needing - the Norway shooter has to be a Christian right wing extremist and fundamentalist who hates Muslims." He adds: "The mainstream media spinning of this story thus far is shameful and I fear it will become more so as this story continues to unfold." Even more disturbing is a blog by Pam Geller of Atlas Shrugs who posted two different screen captures of Breivik's Facebook page. The first screen capture, entirely in Norwegian, shows the Breivik account with no reference to his religious or political beliefs. This screenshot was taken prior to the attacks. In the second screen capture, Breivik's Facebook page is in English and has religious and political views listed as "Christian" and "Conservative." Gellar maintains that the second screenshot was taken "shortly thereafter" the attacks began Geller asks: "Did he have two different Facebook pages, one in Norwegian and one in English, and he only identified himself as a Christian and a conservative on the English one? Or did he pause from his murder spree to add 'Christian' and 'conservative' to his Facebook profile? Or maybe the whole page is a fake, as has been reported here." She goes on to ask the next obvious question - if the page is indeed a fake, "who faked it, and why? Who is so anxious to portray Breivik as a Christian and conservative?" That the mainstream media would to to such length to progress their own ideology is nothing new. In fact, a story flashed across the cover of The New York Times implied that conservative American bloggers influenced Breivik. The article claims the shooter closely followed the "acrimonious American debate over Islam" and that he quotes Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch 64 times in his manifesto.
"Yet when a pair of homegrown terrorists were arrested in Seattle last month before a planned attack on a military facility, the Times chose not to inform readers that the duo were Muslim-converts and the ringleader idolized Osama bin Laden," writes Newsbuster's Noel Sheppard. "Now, roughly four weeks later, a sadly successful attack happened thousands of miles away, and the Times was more than happy to point fingers - prominently on its front page! - at American conservatives."
