Another Seedy Abortionist Brought to Justice

patelAn Oklahoma abortionist with a long history of malpractice, fraud, and sexual abuse charges, who was recently hired by the University of Oklahoma to provide medical training to its students, was arrested on Tuesday morning for selling  abortion pills to women who were not pregnant.

LifeNews is reporting on the case of Dr. Nareshkumar Gandalal Patel who runs the Outpatient Services for Women abortion facility in a suburb of Oklahoma City known as Warr Acres. Authorities began an investigation of Patel after receiving a complaint that a woman named Pamela King, who died from complications of cervical cancer, had an abortion procedure at the clinic even though she was not pregnant at the time.

According to the attorney general's office, three undercover agents from the Oklahoma Licensure Board, the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Attorney General's Office who were not pregnant went to Patel's clinic to have a pregnancy test and ultrasound. All three women were told they were pregnant and were sold abortion-inducing drugs.

"The outrageous practice of selling abortions to non-pregnant women is actually a fairly common practice among abortionists nationwide,” said Troy Newman, President of the pro-life organization, Operation Rescue.

“As the number of abortions drop, abortionists find themselves in greater competition for every abortion dollar. Every time a woman walks away from an abortion clinic with a negative pregnancy test, it represents about a $500 loss to the abortion business. Telling non-pregnant women that they are actually pregnant for the purpose of selling them abortions is a huge temptation to greedy abortionists who want to keep their profit margins up.”

But this time, an abortionist was caught in the act, and Patel was promptly arrested and charged with three counts of obtaining money under a false pretense. He posted the $2,000 bail and was released, but could be sentenced to three years in jail and a $15,000 fine.

“This type of fraudulent activity and blatant disregard for the health and well-being of Oklahoma women will not be tolerated,” Oklahoma Attorney General Pruitt said. “Oklahoma women should be able to trust that the advice they receive from their physicians is truthful, accurate, and does not jeopardize their health.”

According to LifeNews, this isn't the first time Patel has been on the wrong side of the law. He has been accused of sexually abusing his patients in the past but a grand jury found him not guilty in 1993 after he managed to convince jurors that the woman was an obsessed stalker.

"He also has a string of malpractice accusations," LifeNews reports. "A judge ordered Patel to pay $240,000 in damages to a 15-year-old girl after a botched abortion in June 1989 left the minor injured for life. According to an eyewitness, Patel pulled the girl's small intestine out. Ultimately, her ovaries, fallopian tubes, and part of her colon had to be removed."

Another woman, Claire Curwell, survived an abortion by Patel on her then-13 year-old mother when her twin was killed but she managed to survive. In a heart wrenching letter penned to Patel in April of this year, Curwell speaks about how the amniotic sac had been ruptured during the abortion and was leaking fluid for weeks, causing her to be born 2.5 months premature.

“Not only was I born 2.5 months premature, but I was born with complications including dislocated hips, club feet, and was on life support in the hospital,” she wrote. “In fact, I still have hip and foot complications today due to the abortion.”

Patel has also admitted to burning a trash bag filled with 55 aborted babies in 1992 because he was having a hard time finding disposal company willing to handle his grisly refuse.

Operation Rescue also filed a complaint against Patel for throwing documents into the trash that contained sensitive information about patients without shredding them or blacking out their names.

In spite of these horrendous practices, last February, the University of Oklahoma actually hired Patel and his abortion facility to provide medical training to its students.

Thankfully, Patel's clinic is currently closed - at least for now.
