Should Pedophiles Get the Same Rights as Homosexuals

Commentary by Susan Brinkmann, OCDS

Experts are beginning to capitalize on the ambiguous term of "sexual orientation" written into so many new laws in the U.S. in order to move toward giving pedophiles the same rights as homosexuals.

Jack Minor, writing for the Northern Colorado Gazette, says the same tactics used by "gay" rights activists is now being employed by experts who say a pedophile's desire for children is a sexual orientation no different than that of a hetero- or homosexual person.

"Critics of the homosexual lifestyle have long claimed that once it became acceptable to identify homosexuality as simply an 'alternative lifestyle' or sexual orientation, logically nothing would be off limits," Minor writes. "'Gay' advocates have taken offense at such a position insisting this would never happen. However, psychiatrists are now beginning to advocate redefining pedophilia in the same way homosexuality was redefined several years ago."

Much like the American Psychiatric Association (APA) did in 1973 when it declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder, the APA issued a report in 1998 claiming “that the ‘negative potential’ of adult sex with children was ‘overstated’ and that ‘the vast majority of both men and women reported no negative sexual effects from childhood sexual abuse experiences.”

The move to bring pedophilia into the mainstream is already afoot, Minor writes.

For example, earlier this year two psychologists in Canada declared that pedophilia is a sexual orientation just like homosexuality or heterosexuality.

Van Gijseghem, psychologist and retired professor of the University of Montreal, told members of Parliament, “Pedophiles are not simply people who commit a small offense from time to time but rather are grappling with what is equivalent to a sexual orientation just like another individual may be grappling with heterosexuality or even homosexuality. . . . True pedophiles have an exclusive preference for children, which is the same as having a sexual orientation. You cannot change this person’s sexual orientation. He may, however, remain abstinent.”

Dr. Quinsey, professor emeritus of psychology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, agreed, saying that there is no evidence that a pedophile's preference for children can be changed.

Other experts suggest that this group of individuals should be taught how to refrain from acting on these urges; however, one suggested they be allowed to use child pornography in order to do so!

Milton Diamond, a University of Hawaii professor and director of the Pacific Center for Sex and Society, stated that child pornography could be beneficial to society because, “Potential sex offenders use child pornography as a substitute for sex against children.”

He makes no mention of the fact that in order to produce that pornography, children are made to suffer sexual abuse.

Another group of psychiatrists have formed an organization known as B4U-Act, which describes itself as "a unique collaborative effort between minor-attracted people and mental health professional to promote communication and understanding between the two groups."

One of its stated aims is to help the minor-attracted person learn "how to live fully and stay within the law."

Believe it or not, pedophilia has already been granted protected status by the federal government in the Matthew Shephard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act which lists "sexual orientation" as a protected class; however, it doesn't define the term.

For this reason, Republicans tried to amend the law specifying that "pedophilia is not covered as an orientation." This amendment was defeated by Democrats with Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) specifically stating that all alternative sexual lifestyles should be protected.

“This bill addresses our resolve to end violence based on prejudice and to guarantee that all Americans, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability or all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms’ that were put forward need not live in fear because of who they are. I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this rule,” Hastings said.

Sex offender laws protecting children have been challenged in several states including California, Georgia and Iowa.

The comments made about Minor's article were telling. Aside from those who argued against any connection between homosexuality and pedophilia, there were several from victims of sexual abuse who were horrified at the mere idea of a society that condones such behavior.

"I was abused as a child, then I was a consenting 14 year old with a much older man WHO RUINED MY SELF WORTH, SELF IMAGE, SELF ESTEEM, ULTIMATELY MY LIFE," one person wrote. "It has taken me many years to be OK with myself, and I’m still not totally OK with being me. My arms and legs are all scarred up from self-harm, because I wasn’t able to handle the way I was treated. This is absolutely disgusting." [Emphasis in original]

Another gave us all an ominous warning: "This world is truly a sick place and getting worse! Judgment is and can’t be far behind!"
